Custom Paper Rope Handle Bags
A paper-based handle format for retail programmes that want a practical carrier with a consistent material story.

- Paper-Based Handle
Overview
Twisted paper rope is the standard handle choice for a broad range of retail carrier bags. It keeps the handle paper-based and visually straightforward, making it a useful starting point when the brief prioritises material simplicity over a textile detail.
The bag still has to be specified around what it will carry. Product dimensions and weight determine the bag proportions, paper choice and whether the base needs reinforcement; the artwork then determines the print and finishing route rather than changing those structural decisions.
What to decide for this format
Product load
Confirm the heaviest item and whether it has rigid corners so the paper and base can be specified for the actual use.
Handle length
Decide whether the bag will be carried by hand or needs more clearance, then set the handle length against the finished bag.
Board & material options

Coated One Side (C1S)
Coated on the printing face, uncoated on the reverse.
The default carton and wrap board. You are paying for coating only where the print goes, so it is the economical choice whenever the inside face is not seen.

White Kraft
Strong uncoated white fibre with a natural surface.
Reads honest rather than glossy, and takes one or two spot colours well. Recycled and FSC-certified grades are available where a materials policy applies.

Natural Brown Kraft
Unbleached brown fibre, the recycled-content standard.
The lowest-processing option we stock. Remember that the brown ground shifts every ink laid over it — colours need proofing on the actual stock, not on white.

Textured & Felt-Marked
Embossed linen, laid and felt surfaces.
Carries a tactile identity with no extra finishing pass. Print sits softer on texture — fine detail and photographic images lose bite, so it suits type and blind emboss better than imagery.
Finishing options

Hot Foil Stamping
Metallic foil applied by heated die, registered to the print.
Gold, silver, copper and coloured foils. Applied flat before any wrapping or forming, so registration is controlled on a sheet rather than on a curve.

Embossing
Raised relief pressed into the surface from behind.
Can be registered over foil for a sculpted metallic mark. Sequence matters: emboss after foil is standard, and reversing it damages the foil surface.

Soft-Touch Lamination
A velvet matte film laminated to the printed surface.
Changes how the pack feels more than how it looks, and hides fingerprints on dark artwork. The most requested finish on premium spirits and skincare.

Die Cutting
Custom shapes, windows and cut-outs.
Windows, shaped lids, handle apertures and label outlines. A window can be left open or patched with clear film depending on whether the product needs protecting.
Materials
Coated Art Paper
A smooth paper surface for full-colour retail artwork, lamination and foil.
Kraft Paper
Brown or white kraft for briefs that prefer an uncoated, material-led surface.
Specialty & Textured Papers
Surface-led papers for retail programmes where texture is part of the design.
FSC-Certified & Recycled Paper
Certified or recycled-content options, confirmed against the required print and load.
Twisted Paper-Rope Handles
Paper-rope length, colour and attachment are specified against the formed bag and intended load.
Base Reinforcement
An inserted board can be specified where bottles, boxes or hard corners require added base support.
Printing & Finishes
UV Offset Printing
Instant curing on the KBA 8+2 line, so heavy solids and dark grounds can be folded without set-off.
Matte & Soft-Touch Lamination
Changes the feel and protects dark artwork from scuffing during handling and transport.
Hot Foil Stamping
Metallic brand marks, most effective as a small element on a matte or textured ground.
Embossing & Debossing
Relief detail on the panel or the base fold, often used with foil on prestige retail bags.
Spot UV
Gloss varnish on selected elements for contrast against a matte laminated panel.
Die-Cut Windows & Shapes
Shaped tops, cut-outs and profile edges where the bag itself carries the brand silhouette.

Terms for this specification
- Sampling
- Presentation-quality sample in 5–7 working days. The sample cost is credited against your first approved production order.
- Colour matching
- Pantone references and physical samples are used where the selected print process supports them. The approval method follows the substrate, artwork and process.
- Certifications
- ISO 9001, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001 and China Environmental Labelling (Ten-Ring). ISO 22000 applies to eligible food-contact work.
- Sustainable options
- FSC-certified or recycled-content paper and board, water-based inks and adhesives, and fibre-based fitments are available where the selected construction supports them.
What drives the cost
We do not publish a price list, because no two specifications are alike. The levers that decide a quote are consistent, though.
Quantity
Most of the cost of a print job is set-up — plates, dies, make-ready, the first good sheet. Doubling a run rarely doubles the price, which is why it is worth asking for two or three volumes on the same quote.
Structure
A rigid box is formed, wrapped and often assembled by hand; a folding carton is die-cut and glued in one pass. Structure is usually the single biggest difference between two otherwise identical packs.
Material
Board grade and wrap stock. Specialty and textured papers cost more per sheet, but can replace a finishing pass — sometimes the cheaper route to the same effect.
Finishing passes
Each of foil, emboss, spot UV and lamination is a separate pass through a machine. Two effects cost roughly twice one, so the question is always which effect earns its place.
Tooling
Dies, emboss plates and foil blocks are one-off costs carried by the first order and reused on every repeat. Repeat runs of an approved specification are materially cheaper than the first.
Design & artwork
From an artwork check, through a dimensioned dieline and print-ready files, to a full concept package across a range — done by the factory that will make it.
Applications
Luxury & Fashion Retail
In-store carrier bags with lamination, foil and ribbon handles, sized across a range from accessories to apparel.
Beauty & Fragrance
Counter and gift-with-purchase bags produced to the same colour standard as the cartons they carry.
Events & Corporate
Conference, launch and corporate gifting bags, usually shorter runs with fast turnaround.
How it is made
Load & dimension review
What goes in the bag, and how heavy it is, decides paper weight, handle type and base construction.
Dieline & artwork
We issue the flat dieline showing panel, gusset and fold allowances so artwork lands correctly after forming.
Sampling
A made-up bag in 5–7 working days to judge handle feel and how the print sits after folding.
UV offset printing
Printing on the KBA 8+2 with Pantone colours matched to your physical reference.
Lamination & finishing
Lamination, foil stamping, embossing and spot UV before the sheet is cut and creased.
Forming & handle fitting
Automated forming and gluing, base reinforcement inserted, then handles attached and reinforced.
Inspection & export packing
Handle-pull and visual checks against the approved sample, then flat packing for container efficiency.
Why Yuan Packaging
- KBA 8+2 UV offset line dedicated to bags — instant cure handles heavy solids and dark grounds cleanly
- Handle and base construction specified against the load, not applied as a standard template
- Mono-material options: FSC-certified or recycled board, water-based inks and paper rope handles
- Bags, cartons and rigid boxes produced on one site so a retail programme keeps one colour standard
Frequently asked questions
When should we choose a paper-rope handle?
Choose it when you want a straightforward retail carrier with a paper-based handle. The intended load still needs to be reviewed because handle choice does not replace the need to specify the paper and base correctly.
Can a paper-rope bag match our carton or gift box?
Yes. The bag, folding carton and rigid box can be sampled to one colour reference, while the bag dimensions are set around the finished pack it will carry.
