Overview
A shoulder-neck box is a two-piece box with a third component: an inner collar, fixed to the base, that stands proud of it. The lid drops over the collar and stops against a shoulder, so instead of one box swallowing another you get a deliberate horizontal line where the two meet.
That line is why the structure is specified. It lets two materials or two colours meet at a designed point — a textured lid over a black base, or a printed lid with a metallic collar showing between them. On a plain telescoping box that junction is an accident of fit; here it is a design element.
The collar also does structural work. It aligns the lid every time it is replaced, takes the wear that would otherwise fall on the base walls, and makes the closure feel more precise on the tenth opening than a simple friction fit does on the second.

Frequently asked questions
How is this different from a plain lid and base box?
A plain lid drops over the base and hides the junction. A collar raises the base so the lid stops on a visible shoulder, giving you a designed line where two materials can meet — and a closure that stays aligned over repeated use.
Does the collar add much cost?
It is a third wrapped component, so yes, some. Against that it protects the base edges and keeps the closure aligned, which matters on a box that will be opened repeatedly in a shop rather than once at home.
Can the collar be a different material?
Yes, and it is usually the point. A metallic or contrasting collar shows as a band between lid and base — the cheapest way to get a two-material look without wrapping the whole box twice.
