Sourcing packaging from China, delivered to Europe.
Many of our current clients are in the EU and the UK, and the same questions come before every first order: what the minimum really is, how fast a sample arrives, how long the sea leg takes, who clears customs and pays the VAT, what the new EU packaging rules ask of a supplier, and whether the colour comes out right. Here are our answers, with the numbers we actually work to.
What EU and UK brands need before ordering packaging from China: minimums, samples, sea freight to Rotterdam, Hamburg or Felixstowe, DDP vs DAP and PPWR.
What it takes to start a run
There is no single minimum order quantity, because the number follows the setup your job needs: a cutting die for the structure, printing plates for each colour, foil and embossing dies, and makeready sheets before the first good one comes off the press. Those costs are paid once, whichever quantity you order.
The figures below are indicative starting points, not quotes. Each additional finish — hot foil, embossing, spot UV, soft-touch lamination — carries its own setup and its own minimum, so a heavily finished box sits well above a single-colour carton. Ask for tiered pricing and you will see exactly where your cost breakpoints fall.
Custom labels — from 1,000 units
Printed paper bags — typically 500–1,000 units
Rigid gift boxes — typically 500–1,000 units
Peptide vial gift boxes — from 500 boxes
Folding cartons — from 1,000 units
Nothing ships in volume before you have held it
Producing a sample takes one to two weeks, and a peptide vial kit with the insert cut to your own vials takes 7–10 days. DHL Express from China then typically delivers in two to five days. Allow roughly two to three weeks end to end, and tell us if a launch or a trade-show date makes that tight.
Send the recipient’s full address and phone number, and the business’s EORI number where it has one. The commercial invoice has to match what is physically in the box: complete paperwork is what keeps a sample moving through customs rather than sitting in a broker’s queue. The sample itself is produced and priced individually and does not reflect production unit cost.
Air for approval, sea to Rotterdam, Hamburg or Felixstowe
Samples move by air, always — a brand director waiting on final colour or foil placement cannot spend six weeks finding out the finish is wrong. Once the specification is signed off, production moves by sea to the port your forwarder works with — Rotterdam or Hamburg for most of the continent, Felixstowe for the UK — because unit freight cost across a container matters far more than a few days of transit.
The sea leg from China to Northern Europe is measured in weeks, sometimes more than a month, depending on the lane, port congestion and whether your cargo travels as a full container or consolidated with other shippers’ goods. Diversions around canal chokepoints can add a week or more to an otherwise predictable sailing, so ask your forwarder for the current schedule before you fix a launch date.
As a rule of thumb, shipments over 150 to 200 kilograms with no hard deadline favour sea. Embossed and foil-stamped surfaces travel better in a full container than consolidated with other shippers’ cargo, so the FCL and LCL decision is a quality decision as well as a cost one.
DDP or DAP, and who recovers the VAT
Under DDP the seller arranges import clearance and pays the duty and import VAT, so the price on the quote is the price at your door. Under DAP the goods arrive at your named address and your own customs broker clears them, with your business paying the duty and VAT under its own EORI number. We ship DDP or DAP to the EU and the UK — choose either on your quote.
The deciding question is usually VAT. Import VAT is normally recoverable only by the business that pays it, so a VAT-registered importer often does better clearing its own goods under DAP, while DDP suits samples and first orders, where a predictable landed price matters more. The UK runs its own customs and VAT system, with a separate GB EORI number, but the same reasoning applies.
We will not quote you a duty or VAT rate. Classification and rates are for your customs broker to confirm: take the HS code from our commercial invoice to them, and build the answer into your landed cost before you commit to a run.
PPWR, UK EPR and what we can document
The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) applies from 12 August 2026. It replaces the old packaging directive with rules that apply directly in every member state — on recyclability, on minimising weight and empty space, on substances in packaging, on labelling and on the technical documentation behind them — with several requirements phased in over the following years. The obligations sit mainly with the business that places the packaging on the EU market, which is usually your brand or your importer.
Tell us what your compliance team needs — material specifications, FSC-certified board, test reports — and we confirm what we can supply with your quote. Where recyclability is the target, paper-based inserts and single-material constructions make the case simpler than foam and plastic trays.
In the UK, packaging Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requires obligated businesses to report the packaging they place on the market and, above the size thresholds, to pay fees by material and weight. Tell us what your EPR reporting needs — component materials and weights — and we confirm what we can supply with your quote.
Proofing across two continents
Colour is where remote sourcing most often goes wrong, because a screen in Amsterdam and a press in Jiangsu do not agree about anything until someone writes the tolerance down. Send Pantone references rather than screenshots, name coated or uncoated, and put an acceptable Delta-E in the specification.
Then hold us to a physical proof before bulk. Printing runs on a Koenig & Bauer Rapida 106 with in-house foiling, embossing and lamination, so the pass that carries your colour and the pass that carries your finish happen under one roof and one standard. If your retailer or distributor asks for transit testing, we build the prototype from production materials so the lab tests what will actually ship.
Gift boxes for peptide skincare and vial kits
For brands selling peptide skincare, nutricosmetics or clinic vial kits in Europe, we make rigid gift boxes — magnetic, drawer or lid-and-base — with inserts cut to 2 to 10 ml vials in kits of 1 to 12. The minimum is 500 boxes; a prototype takes 7–10 days, and production 15–20 days after you approve it.
We make the packaging only. The product, its claims and its labelling are the brand’s, and the buyer is responsible for the product’s regulatory compliance and labelling in each market.
Recent European projects
Three recent vial-kit projects for clients in Germany, the UK and Sweden: what each client needed to fix, what we built, and what changed.
Cosmeceutical and aesthetic clinic distributor
Frankfurt, Germany
In standard paperboard trays, the vials in serum kits shipped across the EU by courier shifted and collided at transit hubs, and routine 2°C–8°C clinic refrigeration softened the trays through moisture absorption.
We built a 2.0mm greyboard magnetic book-style presentation box wrapped in 157gsm coated art paper with a waterproof soft-touch BOPP film barrier, around a closed-cell, hydrophobic EVA foam insert (hardness 38° Shore C) laser-cut to 0.3mm negative tolerances; the closed cells keep ambient moisture out in cold-chain transport. It was delivered DDP to the client’s logistics hub in Germany, with import clearance and EU VAT processing handled by us.
Transit breakage fell from 2.4% to zero across 15,000 sets, and the client reorders every 60 days.
UK laboratory supplies distributor
London
The client needed high-density secondary packaging that fitted 10 x 2ml vials plus a diluent vial slot within standard Royal Mail and DPD small-parcel dimensions, to keep courier costs to a minimum.
We built a space-optimised two-piece rigid sliding drawer box with an integrated pull ribbon and a custom-fit exterior paper slipcase, finished in anti-scratch matte lamination with subtle spot UV geometric patterns. Custom break-away, serialised tamper-evident foil labels bridge the sleeve seam, for instant visual verification of supply-chain integrity.
Outer carton shipping volume fell by 32%, saving the client an estimated £1.40 per outbound parcel while elevating the unboxing experience.
Dermatological skincare and bio-infusion brand
Stockholm, Sweden
Nordic regulatory and consumer pressure meant eliminating non-recyclable plastics, but the brand’s existing paper pulp trays shed fine cellulose dust onto vial stoppers and aluminium crimps.
We built an FSC-certified 1200gsm greyboard box wrapped in unbleached FSC virgin kraft paper and printed with low-VOC vegetable-based soy inks, with a dust-free, food-grade micro-flocked paper pulp tray in an anti-static finish that holds 5 ampoules and 5 freeze-dried vial units securely without generating dust.
All secondary packaging components reached 100% FSC-certified status, and the packaging passed European retail cosmetic compliance audits with zero particulate contamination.
Frequently asked questions
Do you ship to both the EU and the UK?
Yes. Many of our current clients are in the EU and the UK. Production moves by sea — usually into Rotterdam or Hamburg for the continent and Felixstowe for the UK — and samples by express courier. The UK has its own customs, VAT and EORI system, so tell us where the goods will clear.
How long does sea freight to Rotterdam or Hamburg take?
Weeks rather than days, and sometimes more than a month, depending on the lane, port congestion, canal diversions and whether your cargo travels as a full container or consolidated. Your forwarder can give the current schedule — tell us the sailing you are aiming for when you place the order.
Should we buy DDP or DAP?
DDP gives a predictable delivered price and suits samples and first orders. DAP usually suits a VAT-registered importer, because import VAT is normally recoverable only by the business that pays it. We quote either for EU and UK deliveries — tell us which, and where the goods will clear. Under DAP, confirm duty and VAT with your customs broker.
What does PPWR mean for packaging we buy from you?
The PPWR applies from 12 August 2026 and phases in rules on recyclability, packaging minimisation, substances and documentation, with the obligations sitting mainly on whoever places the packaging on the EU market. Tell us what your compliance team needs — material specifications, FSC-certified board, test reports — and we confirm what we can supply with your quote.
Can we see a sample in Europe before we order?
Yes, and we recommend it for every new specification. Producing a sample takes one to two weeks — 7–10 days for a peptide vial kit — and DHL Express from China typically delivers in two to five days. Include the recipient’s EORI number, where the business has one, with the address.
Send a specification and we will send a price.
Dimensions, quantity, finishes, the destination port or address and the date it needs to land. We hold ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2018 and China’s Ten-Ring environmental label. FSC-certified or recycled-content paper and board, water-based inks and adhesives, and fibre-based fitments are available where the selected construction supports them — tell us what documentation your compliance team needs and we will confirm what we can supply before you order, not after.
